Jenna Ortega recently reflected on building friendships with fellow former child stars, including Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder, and Natasha Lyonne. In a candid conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, the Wednesday star revealed how connecting with them has made a big impact on her. She describes her friendship with them as “beneficial and so cozy.”
Reflecting on their history, Ortega said, “They’ve seen it all, and, honestly, during a much darker time in Hollywood.” The actress added, “We’ve all got this jaded way about us that I don’t think we’d have if we hadn’t started so young and had so many brutal realizations and experiences.” Ortega paused briefly before adding with dry humor, “But they turned out all right.”
Ortega also related to a sentiment shared by Portman, who is her co-star in the upcoming thriller, The Gallerist. Portman remarked that being physically small often results in others treating you like a child, regardless of age. She said, “We’re both physically tiny, so people will often treat you like a child forever. I’m 43 now, and people kind of pat me on the head. I don’t look like a child, but I often feel like I’m treated like a kid.”
Ortega agreed with Portman’s observation, saying, “I relate to that so immensely, and it’s always been really annoying, because you just don’t feel like you’re being taken seriously.” The Wednesday star also pointed out that young women face harsher judgment than their male peers.
Outside of acting, Ortega is expanding her role behind the camera. She’s set to produce the second season of Wednesday and hopes to direct a script that she has been working on for nearly a decade.
