Jannik Sinner gets one step closer to defending his title at the US Open. He started his campaign with a dominating (6-1,6-1,6-2) victory against the Czech, Vit Kopriva. It took the Italian 1 hour and 38 minutes to win the first round match by 6-1,6-1,6-2. Sinner showed little sign of illness, which forced him to take a mid-match retirement from the Cincinnati Open final against his fierce rival, Carlos Alcaraz. So, following that impressive win, he said, “I’m very happy that I’m healthy again and that we did our best to be in the best possible shape here.”
He said he’s very happy to come back here and compete against the best players in the world. Jannik Sinner carried forward that momentum in the second round and secured yet another comfortable victory. This time, he defeated Australia’s Alexei Popyrin by 6-3,6-2,6-2. However, in the third round, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov did push Sinner to four sets. The Canadian stunned everyone by stealing the first set by 7-5 against the world number one. With that, he also snapped Sinner’s streak of 17 consecutive sets won in hard-court Slams. But Jannik Sinner responded strongly by winning three sets in a row. Top-class tennis for the Italian!
This match was full of drama, with Shapovalov once even getting engaged in an argument with the chair umpire as he wanted to see a replay on the foot fault call when he was serving for the set against Sinner. But eventually, Sinner managed to win the match by 5-7,6-4,6-3,6-3.
