‘It’s No Secret’: Nicolas Cage Explains Why Spider-Noir Is His First TV Show

Nicolas Cage is finally making his superhero TV debut with the upcoming Spider-Noir. The actor will lead a show after previously playing Ghost Rider and Superman on the big screen.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Cage revealed that he wanted to wait for something unique in the comic-book space to make his debut on TV.

“Well, it’s no secret that I’ve been wanting to wait for something very unique, something extremely, in my view, that would be extremely special,” said Cage. “And when I heard about Spider-Noir, [that] it would be black-and-white, and that it would be in the ’30s, and I could channel some of my favorite old-world film noir actors like Bogart and Cagney and Edward G. Robinson, and then collide it, mash it up with what was arguably Stan Lee’s greatest masterpiece, Spider-Man. I thought that would be a collision that would create something brand new, something I hadn’t seen before.”

“I didn’t want to do anything homogenized. I wanted to do something that has some spark and some pop, and some danger to it. [And] Some risk.”

Cage’s initial rendition of Spider-Noir was first introduced to audiences in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The character returned in its sequel and is expected to feature in the conclusion of the trilogy, Beyond the Spider-verse, next year. However, the Spider-Noir of the Spider-verse films is a variant of Peter Parker. In the upcoming show, Cage plays Ben Reilly, separating him from the version fans know and love.

Spider-Noir is created and executive produced by showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, along with director Harry Bradbeer. Spider-Verse’s creative team, including Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, was also involved in the production of Spider-Noir. Cage, Aditya Sood, Dan Shear, and Pavlina Hatoupis also serve as executive producers.

Spider-Noir premieres on MGM+ on May 25, 2026, and will be released globally on Prime Video on May 27. Spider-Noir will be available to stream in both black-and-white and in color. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has a release date set for June 18, 2027, in the United States.
