It Ends With Us 2: Colleen Hoover on Potential Sequel After Justin Baldoni & Blake Lively Drama

Bestselling author Colleen Hoover has addressed the possibility of a movie adaptation of her follow-up novel It Starts With Us. Her comments come after months of public attention surrounding the first It Ends With Us movie and the reported tension between stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.

Speaking with Variety while promoting the upcoming movie adaptation of her thriller Verity, Hoover explained that she does not control the film rights for the sequel.  

“I mean, I don’t own the rights to the film sequel,” Hoover said. “So, if they decide to make another one, I’m all for it! I personally don’t see that happening. I’m also curious what it’s like to have so much drama attached to one of your works? You entrusted your work to someone, and it’s turned into, I don’t even know what at this point.”

Hoover also made it clear that she remains proud of the first movie despite the controversy that followed its release.  

“I feel for everyone, you know? As the author, I was, and am, so proud of that movie,” Hoover said. “I think they did a great job. I think Blake [Lively] was great in it, Justin [Baldoni] was great in it, Brandon [Sklenar] was great in it, and I saw the completed film before any of that happened, or I knew it was happening, so I was proud of the film! And I still am. It was a huge hit.”

What happened between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively in regards to It Ends With Us?

Reports of tension between Baldoni, who directed the movie and played Ryle Kincaid, and Lively, who played Lily Bloom, became public during the film’s promotional tour in August 2024. 

The two did not appear together at the New York premiere, while several cast members also stopped following Baldoni on social media. Reports later pointed to disagreements over the film’s creative direction, including its editing and marketing. 

The movie’s narrative centers on domestic violence, while some of the promotional elements focused more on its romantic elements.

Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios optioned the film rights to the story in 2019. During press rounds prior to release, Baldoni publicly suggested that Lively would be better suited to direct a potential sequel.

It Ends With Us proved to be a major commercial success, earning over $350 million worldwide.
