Jessie Buckley has swept the 2026 awards season with her role in Hamnet as William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, opposite Paul Mescal as the Bard – including winning the Oscar for best actress.

The 36-year-old rose to fame in 2008 as part of the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, in which she joined a host of hopefuls vying for the part of Nancy in a West End revival of the show Oliver!

After finishing in second place, Jessie went on to forge a formidable career in TV and film, appearing in the BBC series War & Peace and Taboo.

Breaking onto the silver screen with the 2018 musical film Wild Rose, she went on to star in starring roles in Chernobyl, Men, and Women Talking.

In addition to previous Bafta and Academy Award nominations for her roles in Wild Rose and The Lost Daughter, she also won a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in 2021’s West End revival of Cabaret.

But how much do we really know about Jessie Buckley? From her lesser-seen husband to their historic country house and secret wedding, here’s the lowdown on the rising star.

Who is Jessie Buckley’s husband, Freddie?

Jessie Buckley is married to the enigmatic Freddie Sorensen, who she says works in the mental health profession.

During an appearance on Jessie and Lennie Ware’s Table Manners podcast in 2024, Jessie revealed that Freddie is English, and hails from Islington.

Beyond that, all we know about their relationship is that they met on a blind date, after being set up by a music executive with whom Jessie worked on Wild Rose.

Before pursuing a career in mental health, Freddie served as producer for a number of high-profile television projects, including The X Factor, ITV’s Game of Talents UK, and producing two episodes of the BBC’s Gladiators reboot in 2022.

Freddie has kept out of the spotlight since his secret marriage to Jessie in 2023, with British Vogue reporting this month that ‘anonymity is essential’ to his new profession.

And, while she says he’s ‘having a ball eating canapés’ at promotional events, the pair won’t be making their red carpet debut together anytime soon… if ever.

However, the Daily Mail have since revealed that Freddie did previously make a showing at the Oscars in 2022, when Jessie was nominated Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Lost Daughter.

In a picture from the event, Freddie can be seen smiling as he sits at a table with Jessie and actresses Olivia Coleman and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

In another image, Freddie is pictured laughing while Maggie’s brother, Jake Gyllenhaal sits in the foreground.

She did shout out Fred in her Oscars acceptance speech, where he was also in attendance, saying, ‘You’re my best friend, and I want to have 20,000 more babies with you, I do. I do!’

Does Jessie Buckley have children?

Jessie and Freddie share one child together – a daughter, Isla, whom she revealed that she was expecting last year.

In November, she shared an update on how she was finding motherhood, telling Elle: ‘The best thing about being a mom is just when even when you’re having a hard day, they give you these otherworldly little smiles and make your heart crack into a thousand pieces, and you think, “Oh, it’s all going to be okay.”‘

She added: ‘My little girl just started to laugh and make silly noises. I think it’s the funniest and cutest thing in the world.’

In December, Jessie shared another update while on The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast.

‘Everyone’s doing great… Everything’s different… Everything’s new,’ she revealed.

‘This little human is new. You’re new. Your relationship’s new. Your whole relationship to the world is new. It’s intense, but it’s just — I just love it. I love it so much.’

In her Oscars speech, she further expressed her joy at becoming a new mum, stating ‘I love you and I love being your mom, and I can’t want to discover life beside you.’

Inside Jessie Buckley’s historic house and secret wedding

While details remain thin on the ground surrounding Jessie and Freddie’s wedding, she did share how they had tied the knot at their home in Norfolk.

‘Friends of ours had moved to Norfolk and bought this old place for like nothing on an auction,’ Jessie said on Table Manners.

She continued: ‘And then they showed us this house that we live in, which is like [from the] 1500s and falling down… it’s a really amazing old house that’s been there forever.”

Of the wedding itself, she added: ‘One of my favourite memories of the day was I wanted a keg of Guinness, and I definitely wanted their cheese toasties at a certain hour.’
