
It’s the last weekend of April, which means it’s the calm before the summer storm at the box office. In May, there are all kinds of big releases coming out - Thunderbolts*, Final Destination: Bloodlines and Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. But this weekend is serving up a horror video game adaptation, a re-release of a Star War, and a bunch of indies, which you can read more about below.
The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Five” - Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Pictures, and Columbia Pictures. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. On Swift Horses

Plot: Muriel and her husband Lee are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of Lee's brother. Muriel embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.
What you should know: Based on the novel of the same name by Shannon Pufahl. The character of Muriel was inspired by Pufahl's grandmother and her experiences in the world of gambling in the 1950s.

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii MCMLXXII
Director: Adrien Maben
Genre: Concert, Documentary
Storyline: British progressive rock band Pink Floyd perform at the ancient Roman Amphitheater in the ruins of Pompeii, Italy in 1971. Although the band perform a typical live set from the era, there is no audience beyond the basic film crew.
What you should know: Digitally re-mastered in 4K from the original 35mm footage with enhanced audio.

Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie
Director: David Bushell
Genre: Documentary, Comedy
Storyline: Explores Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong’s 5-decade career performing stand-up, making records, and starring in hit films, as well as their comedy partnership and lasting influence on pop culture.
What you should know: Cheech has 173 acting credits on IMDB, while Chong has 77.

The Accountant 2

Plot: Christian Wolff applies his brilliant mind and illegal methods to reconstruct the unsolved puzzle of a Treasury chief's murder.
What you should know: The sequel to 2016’s The Accountant.

What you should know: Won the Special Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
