In Just 3 Days, ‘Project Hail Mary’ Has Officially Crushed Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Cult Classic

After nearly tripling the lifetime global box office haul of Chris Prattand Rebecca Ferguson's recent film Mercy, Project Hail Mary has surpassed the domestic haul of another artificial intelligence-themed movie. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary vastly exceeded expectations in its opening weekend, on the back of excellent buzz and near-unanimous praise from critics. The movie is based on a bestseller by The Martian author Andy Weir, and has already broken several box-office records in its three-day run. It delivered the largest opening weekend haul for an Amazon MGM title, and outgrossed the domestic debuts of Christopher Nolan's Inception and Interstellar. It fell short of Oppenheimer's debut haul by just $2 million, and claimed the number two spot on the list of the largest opening weekend hauls for an original movie.
