If Coronation Street fans were in any doubt that newcomer Idris Nazir (Junade Khan) is an out-and-out wrong’un, they’re about to get some serious proof. So is his girlfriend Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson).
It all started off so well.
Idris Nazir rode onto the cobbles like a knight in shining armour (or a flashy sports car, in this case) and turned Leanne’s head by throwing some rude customers out of Speed Daal for picking on Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey).
Okay. He might have a bit of a naughty side. He did pin poor sweet randomer Damo (Jake Parry) against the wall of the ginnel before demanding owed money from the terrified man. But Leanne’s been through a lot. Her adopted son Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) was pushed to a psychotic breakdown by manipulative child predator Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon). The least we can do is forgive her a cheeky romp with Weatherfield’s latest badboy.
Except Idris takes bad to a whole new level. Like, slum lord bad.
The so-called property developer is responsible for the hospitalisation of Abi Webster’s (Sally Carman) son Alfie Franklin (Carter and Oakley Razak Townsend), after an unchecked patch of black mould in the property that he was leasing to them gave the poor child severe breathing difficulties.
Instead of dealing with it properly, Idris had his new henchman Brodykidnap the previous landlord responsible for the damp and put the fear of God in him.
It doesn’t end there. Recently the Cobbles baddie set his sights on Speed Daal, the local curry house belonging to his cousin Alya Nazir (Sair Khan). When she expressed reluctance to hand over her business, Idris dropped a bombshell family secret out of spite – he’s not actually Alya’s cousin at all, but her uncle, due to the fact that her granddad had an affair.
While Idris is determined to get his grubby mits on Speed Daal, Leanne remains blissfully ignorant of her new beau’s nasty streak. Well, not totally ignorant. The new hunk on the Cobbles did show a concerning controlling side by deliberately turning the ringer off Leanne’s phone during a steamy session, so a call from Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) wouldn’t spoil the mood. But Leanne’s too loved up to see the red flags.
That might be about to change.
In upcoming episodes of Coronation Street, Alya’s decision to sell Speel Daal brings out the monster in Idris which even Leanne cannot ignore.
When Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) points out that Alya’s missed an important deadline, she realises that it’s time to choose between her legal career and the restaurant, Alya knows he’s right.
At Speel Daal, she breaks the news to Idris and Leanne that she’s decided to sell the business to an old friend of the family.
Idris is practically rubbing his hands together to assume that Speed Daal will soon be his…
… which of course, it isn’t. The next day, Alya shows Gavin, the potential buyer around the restaurant, Idris watches them like a hawk. Gavin’s impressed by the business. But as he heads to his car, Idris approaches. What will he say?
Whatever it is, it can’t have been good. Because the next day, Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) and Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) warn Leanne that Idris is a thug and they have it on good authority that he put the frighteners on Gavin, the potential buyer.
Will Leanne believe them?
