House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere’s Massive Runtime Revealed

House of the Dragon is returning with its longest season premiere yet. HBO’s opening episode for Season 3 will run significantly longer than past premieres.

The extended runtime comes as the series prepares to finally deliver one of the most anticipated battles from George R.R. Martin’s world. With the war between the Blacks and Greens escalating, HBO will be starting the new season on a much bigger scale.

How HBO is kicking off House of the Dragon Season 3

Fans won’t have to wait long for major action when House of the Dragon returns on June 21 (Via Screenrant). According to HBO’s schedule, Season 3, Episode 1 is set to air from 9:00 p.m. to 10:12 p.m. ET. That gives the premiere a runtime of roughly 72 minutes, including credits and the usual behind-the-scenes segment. Even with those additions, it still stands as the longest season opener the series has had so far.

The extra time makes sense considering how the season begins. HBO is finally bringing the Battle of the Gullet to the screen, a major conflict that many viewers expected to see in Season 2. The large-scale naval battle features ships, dragons, and heavy casualties, making it one of the most significant events in the history of the Targaryen civil war.

Showrunner Ryan Condal and several cast members have already hinted that the sequence will be unlike anything the series has attempted before.

The 72-minute premiere is longer than Season 1’s 65-minute debut and Season 2’s 58-minute opener. It will also rank as the third-longest episode in the show’s run. Only Season 2’s finale, The Queen Who Ever Was (84 minutes), and Episode 6, Smallfolk (77 minutes), are longer.

Most House of the Dragon episodes typically fall between 50 and 65 minutes. However, HBO appears to be giving additional room for both the battle itself and the story developments that follow. Since Season 3 contains only eight episodes, just like Season 2, longer installments may help cover more of the source material from Fire & Blood.
