Two senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration could soon be out the door following this week’s midterm election bloodbath for the Republicans.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly considering leaving the Trump administration, according to The Independent.
Rubio has met with his advisers to discuss his options, Bloomberg reported. He’s also reportedly considering a presidential run.
Republican Representative Marlin Stutzman told Fox News Digital he was “all in” for Rubio.
Despite the reports, Rubio told The New York Times on Thursday that he plans to stick around.
“I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you,” Rubio told the publication about reports of his possible departure.
“I love the work I’m doing,” he continued. “And plus I always laugh when they say, ‘He’s going to leave his job.’ I go, ‘Which one?’”
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faces an uncertain political future after voters largely rejected the Iran war this week.
Senior Pentagon officials were “confronted” on Wednesday over the war’s unpopularity, and how it likely contributed to historic losses for Republicans in this week’s midterm elections, the Washington Post reported.
While Hegseth could possibly lose his job, Trump might also consider firing General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, or Admiral Brad Cooper, who has overseen the war, according to the Post.
And if Trump doesn’t fire Hegseth, Republican Representative Thomas Massie told CNN he’ll introduce articles of impeachment against him when Congress resumes its session next week. Hegseth responded to the threat of impeachment in a bizarre video statement Thursday.
“A disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly,” Hegseth said.
He added the “politics of personal destruction” failed against President Donald Trump and “it won’t work with me.”
