Since Downton Abbey bid a fond farewell to television and headed for a screen of a bigger variety, it's probably fair to say audiences have been desperately seeking a true period drama with a starry cast and some glitz behind it. Lucky for them, HBO pulled one out of the bag, and audiences never looked back.
