A disappearing spell is about to be cast, as HBO Max and Peacock prepare to remove all eight Harry Potter movies. This comes shortly after two of its spin-off movies also exited HBO Max this month.
All eight Harry Potter movies are leaving HBO Max and Peacock
HBO Max and Peacock will remove all eight Harry Potter movies from their platforms on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 (via Collider). This removal is expected to mainly affect viewers in the United States. This is in addition to the two Fantastic Beasts movies that were also removed from HBO Max earlier this month.
Currently, there is very little official information on where they will stream next. However, they are still available on PVOD platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. There, viewers can rent or buy a digital copy of the movies.
The franchise is based on J.K. Rowling’s eponymous novel series. In an old blog post, she shared that the idea for Harry Potter just “fell” into her head while traveling on a train to London. “I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this scrawny, black-haired, bespectacled boy who didn’t know he was a wizard became more and more real to me,” she explained.
Directed by Chris Columbus, the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, hit theaters in the United States in November 2001. Similar to the book, the movie became a global phenomenon. It was not only a critical success but also had an incredible box-office run.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a critics’ score of 80% and a user score of 82%. It ended its original theatrical run with $974 million globally, on a $125 million reported budget. However, it was re-released multiple times over the years, pushing its total to $1.02 billion.
Harry Potter’s success grew with every entry. By 2011, the remaining seven movies made their way to the big screen. Although the book series consists of only seven titles, the studio split the last book into two movies.
The movies’ cast features Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, and Tom Felton, among others.
