The Hawkeye star had first confirmed her racial background in a 2019 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she noted that she was a “little bit of everything.” She also revealed that she had been to the Phillipines and that her family celebrates their multi-racial and ethnic background. “Yeah, it’s a bunch of stuff in between,” she added (via People).

She further spoke about “feeling closer” to her ancestors after learning more about their and her late grandfather’s history. “This movie started a big conversation for me, and I hope that’s one of the many things it does for viewers,” she added.

Aside from Steinfeld, Sinners was also a personal film for Ryan Coogler. The director told NBC News that the new film was a tribute to his late Uncle James, who was “the oldest male member” of his Mississipi family.
