The truth is out there – and it could be shaped like a vegetable.

A mysterious object resembling a giant floating potato has emerged as one of the stranger potential alien sightings detailed in a new batch of UFO files released by the Trump administration.

The object was reportedly spotted over Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado in February 2022 by an Army intelligence officer and four members of his unit stationed at Fort Carson, according to newly disclosed government documents.

Witnesses said the object was seen hovering motionless above the mountain range on a clear winter morning before apparently changing shape and then disappearing.

‘The witnesses describe the object as roughly the size of a large jet and resembling an angular, non-symmetrical potato made of uneven panels,’ according to the documents.

The reports state that the object ‘was completely stationary about 300-500 feet above’ the mountains but ‘slowly appeared to change shape’ and ‘had a slightly translucent, shimmering white appearance, with defined edges and a milky shimmer that reflected sunlight.’

The object subsequently vanished from view. Two years later, one of the witnesses was interviewed at an FBI field office in New York.

During the meeting, the witness worked with a forensic sketch artist to produce an illustration of the object, which appeared to depict a potato-shaped form floating above a mountainous landscape.

An FBI summary of the interview included additional details. It stated that the sighting occurred at ‘approximately 11:25 am’ and described the object as being ‘made up of what can best be described as articulating fish scales or panels that were non-symmetrical, non-overlapping, and irregular shaped’.

According to the witness account, the object was ‘perfectly still’ while its surface appeared to shift in patterns, with panels moving in ‘slow waves starting at different points of origin but at the same time’.

The documents form part of a wider release of UFO-related records ordered by US president Donald Trump.

Announcing the disclosure programme last month, Mr Trump said previous administrations had ‘failed to be transparent on this subject’.

While the latest sighting has attracted attention for its unusual appearance, it is not the first time a potato-shaped object has featured in UFO reports.

Declassified US Department of Defense records show that in 1950, a witness in the Arkansas town of Piggott reported seeing an object resembling a ‘100-pound sack of potatoes’ drifting at an altitude of about 8,000 feet. An investigator at the time suggested it may have been a balloon.

The newly released files also contain details of another unexplained incident. According to the official report, six federal law enforcement agents observed ‘orbs launching other orbs’ near a sensitive national security site in the western United States over two days in October 2023.

An assessment by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office was unable to reach a definitive conclusion on the sighting – though it did not rule out military testing.

The report stated that ‘the characteristics described in the agents’ narrative account align with those of certain U.S. military technologies’ but that no single system ‘fully accounts for all the phenomena’s reported characteristics.’
