General Hospital’s Portia Wants Jordan ‘Out of My Uterus,’ Says Brook Kerr (Exclusive)

For weeks now on General Hospital, Portia Robinson has been harboring a big secret — at least trying to! The doctor, who is headed to divorce court with hubby Curtis Ashford, is pregnant, and not only that, but she’s not sure who the father is, Curtis or Isaiah, the handsome colleague who she’s been hooking up with behind closed doors. The last person Portia would want to know she’s expecting is Jordan, Curtis’s ex-wife, who has long been an unofficial third wheel in her marriage. Unfortunately for Portia, Jordan did figure it out — and did run straight to Curtis.

Womb With A View

“Yeah, don’t love that,” Brook Kerr (Portia) quips in character. “She’s always in my business, always being the third character, and Portia and Curtis aren’t even together anymore! It’s extremely invasive, it’s extremely frustrating, and Portia doesn’t like it at all. She’s like, ‘Get out of my uterus!'”

While Portia was hoping to maintain control over how the news got out, “She knew that it was going to come to a point of accountability,” Kerr insists. “She’s got all these plates spinning in her head, but I think Portia had kind of accepted the fact that this” — meaning the pregnancy, not the “Who’s the daddy!” of it all — “was going to have to come out soon.”

Just not this soon! “I think Portia wanted to be pretend for a little longer, ‘Everything is all right,’ and just focus on getting through the first trimester,” the actress muses. “And she also wanted to have a little fun,” specifically with Isaiah, preferably between the sheets at his cabin!

When confronted by Curtis on the October 30 episode, Portia did not deny that she’s pregnant. “When he comes to her and asks her, she’s clearly caught off-guard,” Kerr says. “But I think she was just like, ‘Okay, let’s just get it all out there and see how you handle it.’ I don’t think that Portia likes being confronted without being prepared for it, but she just kind of went with it and told him the facts — told him the facts about their marriage, and of course, [we all know] Curtis and his opinionated-ness! Immediately, he talks about wanting to stay together for the baby; he’s already moving 10 steps ahead.”

But as viewers saw, Portia shot that down immediately, laying out her conviction that she didn’t think a baby was a good reason for her and Curtis to call off their divorce and try to make a go of their troubled marriage. “She’s like, ‘No, no, no — things have not changed.’ Staying together for the sake of the child? No. The reasons for our divorce are valid.'”

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

There is a huge thing that Portia noticeably didn’t do in that back-and-forth: Tell Curtis that the baby might not be his! “Listen, Portia needs therapy, for sure,” chuckles Kerr when asked why, after all the problems her secret-keeping have caused her, Portia didn’t just come clean on the spot.
Kerr thinks Portia is justifying that to herself because “Curtis is only thinking about himself and his world; he’s thinking about himself and Jordan. Portia doesn’t think that he’s thinking past that, and he’s just assuming that it’s his [baby].” She adds, “What I’m holding into is what Portia keeps saying to everybody: ‘I’ve just got to get through this first trimester. Either one of them could be the father, but I’m going to get through the first trimester and then I’m going to get a paternity test.'”

At the moment, Portia is more focused on her anger at Jordan for spilling Portia’s secret, and the first Mrs. Ashford’s constant presence in her life, than she is over her guilt for keeping Curtis in the dark. And to hear Kerr tell it, Portia’s blinders are fully off when it comes to Curtis and Jordan. “I think it’s one of those things where she’s finally seeing it now,” Kerr attests. “It’s kind of always been there on the perimeter, but what she’s seeing now is confirmation of that — confirmation that his attention is not on her, where it was supposed to be, and it’s just that black and white for her.”

Jordan blabbing about the pregnancy was just another big slap in Portia’s face. “The conversation they have [about the pregnancy] is prompted by a person other than her and her husband, which is already triggering to Portia,” Kerr points out. “Portia feels like, ‘Jordan is inserting herself, again, into my my life, my marriage, my reproductive system, all of that! And so I no longer even have the choice to tell my husband how I want to!’ To have that taken away is huge. It’s just very uncool.”
