Game of the console
As fun as it is to hear about everyone’s favourite retro games I have to admit I’ve never played a ZX Spectrum or heard of most of the games that people are talking about. My first console was the Mega Drive, so I don’t really go back any further than that. And to be honest I’m not that interested in going back anyway, considering the quality of games we have nowadays.

So I’ll ask the reverse question of Tuesday’s Inbox and say what is the best PlayStation 5 game? Doesn’t have to be first party, just the best game you’ve played on the system, in what has been a pretty turbulent generation so far.

For me the short list includes God Of War Ragnarök, Astro Bot, Elden Ring, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Forza Horizon 5, and Resident Evil Requiem. I’m sure there are other great games I haven’t played but that seems a pretty good line-up to me.

I think I’d probably go for Elden Ring overall. It felt like I spent a lifetime playing that game, and I didn’t regret a second of it. So I’m very excited to hear that the movie might actually be good.

Fall of the Tomb Raider
I’ve been worried about Crystal Dynamics ever since they were sold off and then Embracer started chipping away at them bit by bit. I have no faith that they’ll finish any new Tomb Raider game or that they’ll survive this generation.

It’s so sad to see all these developers that have been around for decades, making great games, being torn apart by bad management and short-sighted bosses. I bet they end up spending far more money on making the Tomb Raider TV show than they do the game, and it’s got a lot better chance of being finished and coming out on time.

I don’t understand why Amazon didn’t buy Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics when they had the chance, especially as it was so cheap. Instead, they got bought by the worst company in the whole business, which is saying a lot when Activision and Microsoft exist.

Faux retro
I got excited about the idea of a new Impossible Mission game and then when I saw the trailer… oh. It looks like exactly the same game. If you’d just showed me the gameplay I’d never be able to tell the difference.

I’m sure there’s some people that must like all that, but I don’t really have any interest in making pretend retro games and being trapped with the limitations of an earlier time. If an indie game has a low budget that’s one thing, but doing it on purpose? I’d rather move on.

I can see that doing a big budget reboot for Impossible Mission is never going to happen but there’s still plenty you could do with modern graphics, keeping it 2D or 2.5D. I’m curious enough to see how much the new game costs but it’s not the comeback I would’ve wanted.

Crazy for a Fox
Starting to get really excited about the idea of more Star Fox. I’ve seen new rumours that it’ll be announced this month, maybe even this week, which would be great.

I really liked the reader’s idea, a few days ago, of having a smaller, lower budget game that would be not very long but could afford to be old school and linear. Kind of like an indie game but done by Nintendo themselves. None of the Star Fox games are long – you can beat the first one in 60 minutes – so you could just argue they’re being authentic.

I feel you could do this with a lot of Nintendo’s lower-profile games that haven’t had a sequel in ages, like F-Zero, Kid Icarus, Advance Wars, and so on. It would even be a chance to bring back ones that we never got in the West, like The Mysterious Murasame Castle or The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls.

They could make up brand new games too and sell them as little experiments. The used to do that on the portable consoles but not really on the Switch and I think that’s a shame.

Unlikely favourites
Some of those celeb responses to their favourite video game are just embarrassing. When you’re talking about Pitfall or Super Mario Bros. as your favourite you’re basically just saying you don’t play them, or you haven’t since you were five. Which is fine, it’s not for everyone, but it’s like being asked your favourite movie and just blurting out Citizen Kane because you heard that’s what other people think is best.

Kudos to the woman that said Returnal though. I’ve seen Glass Onion and I still have no idea who she is, but she’s got great taste and I’m sure she must be looking forward to Saros this week.

Un-interactive entertainment
I went to see the Super Mario Galaxy Movie over the weekend and I can’t say I was particularly impressed with it. It felt less like a movie and more like a series of animated shorts slapped together.

Each section was fine but there wasn’t much cohesion. If you were charitable you could compare it to playing an actual Mario game, each part a new level with a new idea, but that works well in a game, definitely not in a movie.

I was disappointed by the music too, everything was so frenetic that themes would come and go before you could enjoy them.

No doubt it’ll make a billion dollars again and there’ll be a third film, I just hope they get a bit better at pacing things.

GC: It was absolutely aiming to be like playing the actual games.

Last try
I’m really enjoying Marathon but I am getting worried that the number of players on Steam is getting really low. It’s probably going to dip below 25,000 this week and that’s not healthy, not for a big budget game or for keeping Bungie around and in one piece.

It’s not the disaster Concord but I don’t see anyway where it becomes a big hit for Sony, not like Helldivers 2. My question is will that finally make them give up on live service games? I guess we’ll know if they ever announce another one.

Asset Flipper
I know it isn’t viewed in the best light these days, but Ecco The Dolphin is one of my favourite games of the 16-bit era. I understand that we are to be getting HD remasters of the first two and a brand new third game from the original developer, Ed Annunziata, and I’m very excited.

As of writing this email the official website has a countdown timer with 362 hours and 12 minutes left on it, which means I’m expecting some kind of announcement in roughly 15 days’ time.

Does GC have an inside scoop or intend to do a review/preview of the game when there’s more news? I’d really love to see something come to fruition from this franchise, as Ed attempted to get the game out around 2010 but the Kickstarter failed.

I’m really looking forward to some hard as nails cetacean time travel alien fighting action.

GC: There were some screenshots from the remaster recently, in a Japanese magazine. Although we suspect the terms remaster and remake are being confused again. Either way, quite a bit of effort seems to be going into it.

Inbox also-rans
To be honest, I’d be happy if Naughty Dog just left Uncharted as it is and made a new franchise that had some of the same vibe. It wouldn’t be the same without Nate and Nathan North isn’t getting any older.

I think Rockstar should’ve started making GTA 7 with a different team and see which came out first. Maybe you could just skip ahead one and have them coming out at a sensible rate.
