Mia Sara reveals her time filming Ferris Bueller’s Day Off wasn’t a positive experience. The actress also shared candid thoughts about working with director John Hughes.

Mia Sara talks about Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Mia Sara may be best known for playing Sloane Peterson in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Speaking in a recent interview with The Times, Sara admitted she rarely talks about the 1986 classic because her experience making it was difficult.

She said, “I don’t really give interviews because making Ferris Bueller was not that good an experience for me. But I’m very aware of what a precious thing this movie is, and I don’t want to disappoint people.” Sara said her biggest issue involved director John Hughes. The filmmaker directed and wrote the 1986 classic. “I didn’t get along well with John.” She later described Hughes in simple terms, as “a strange guy.”

According to Sara, Hughes wanted the young cast bonding. He often encouraged them to spend time together. “He wanted us all to hang out together and to introduce us to the French New Wave films.” Sara admitted she wasn’t exactly easy back then either. “But the others were seasoned actors, and I was a snotty New York kid and had seen all those movies, so he was frustrated in that desire. I didn’t have the emotional maturity to deal with other people’s egos, or my own.”

Looking back now, Sara sees things differently. She believes maturity would have helped the situation greatly. “I never really had the resilience to deal with the audition process. There are some things in my career that I’m really proud of, but overall it was not a happy career for me.”

Despite those feelings, Sara recently returned to acting after a long break. She appeared in Mike Flanagan’s 2024 film The Life of Chuck.
