The first trailer for the reboot of a classic 90s thriller has landed, leaving fans begging for the ‘near perfect’ original.

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle was released in 1992 and introduced us to Rebecca De Mornay’s unhinged character, Peyton, whose doctor husband took his own life after getting caught sexually assaulting pregnant patient Claire (Annabella Sciorra).

She vowed to get revenge after losing her own baby and plotted to become their nanny, attempting to usurp Claire’s place in the family.

A revival was announced last year, with Maika Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead leading the cast as Polly Murphy and Caitlin Morales respectively.

The remake, which premieres on Hulu on October 22, follows Caitlin and Miguel hiring a seemingly sweet nanny to care for their newborn child, before uncovering her sinister ulterior motive.

In the creepy first-look, Polly is seen getting too familiar with her new employers, spying on them as they sleep, wearing the mom-of-two’s clothes and spending hours with their oldest child.

‘She’s amazing, really became a part of our family,’ Caitlin raves about the new addition, before things take a creepy turn.

As her behavior becomes more sinister, the new mom is asked: ‘What do you know about her? Besides what she’s told you?’

In the final seconds, Polly ominously warns her new boss: ‘You think if you try hard enough, you can stop bad things from happening. But you can’t…’

While it is similar to the plot of the original, fans weren’t quite as taken with the new version and flocked to social media to unpack the teaser.

Commenting underneath Hulu’s Instagram post of the trailer, Chaoticallycrafted insisted: ‘Nothing will top the original. Near perfect film.’

Nyaxie agreed: ‘Nope.. I am sticking to the original one..’

Shorthairvee said: ‘Looks good but you can’t top Rebecca & Annabella & Julianne!!! Classic movie.’

‘The original was really good,’ Janabri_xo wrote.

Over on Reddit, Timojenbin declared: ‘The original was a cultural phenomenon. This may be a good movie, but it won’t have the same impact.’

As IntheNIGHTintheDARK fumed: ‘Looks awful. The original is a guilty pleasure.’

Director Michelle Garza Cervera previously opened up about her decision to take on the remake, and promised that it wouldn’t be a complete copy of Curtis Hanson’s efforts.

‘The studio gave me all the chances to recreate the whole thing and build a new story, new characters, with its own heart. I think that was the best way to honor the original, not try to redo it,’ she told People Magazine. ‘We build a whole different kind of thriller. It’s actually more of a slow burn.

‘Instead of having just a victim and a perpetrator, they’re both in gray areas.

‘I love the antagonists that you can, on a point, empathize with. So there’s a very interesting game, like yin and yang that happens between them.”

Although it is ‘completely different’, she teased that there would also be a few nods for fans of the original to enjoy, adding: ‘Someone, if they watch this movie a couple of times, they’re going to find those easter eggs.’

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is released on Hulu on October 22.
