Taylor Sheridan held nothing back during a recent podcast appearance, taking aim at critics and Hollywood executives alike. The Yellowstone creator revealed why he deliberately provokes reviewers and what he truly thinks about the people greenlighting scripts.

Taylor Sheridan criticizes TV critics and studio executives

Taylor Sheridan launched sharp attacks against television critics and studio executives during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast. The Yellowstone creator appeared on the podcast to promote his new book How Not to Die in Prison, co-written with Tom Nelson. Additionally, he currently has two series on the Emmy ballot this year, including freshman drama The Madison and the sophomore season of Landman.

Meanwhile, Sheridan openly admitted to deliberately provoking critics with his creative decisions on Landman. He acknowledged intentionally underutilizing Demi Moore near a swimming pool throughout Season 1. “The critics and me — I don’t care what they think, and it annoys the shit out of them that I don’t care,” he stated. He further added, “I’ll be the first to tell you that there are things that I do that rage-bait them a bit, and this is one of them. F— ’em, honestly.”

Beyond the critics, the multihyphenate reserved his harshest criticism for network and studio executives overseeing creative work. He described most of them as former marketing professionals or law graduates who climbed through agency mailrooms. “Through attrition, they find themselves the head of development. Well, what do you know about developing story? You know nothing,” he declared.

Furthermore, Sheridan targeted Marvel as an example of broader storytelling failures across Hollywood. He criticized the franchise for relying on “information dumps that you have to follow to get to the action.” He contrasted this with an earlier era when studios turned writers and directors “completely loose.”

As a result, the prolific showrunner explained that his Paramount deal specifically prevents executive interference with his creative process. “This is not a democracy. There’s no committee,” he stated firmly. He also confirmed he has no plans to return to Los Angeles, calling the city “built on sand” while praising New York as far more resilient against shifting political winds.
