The Super Mario Galaxy Movie blew past $1 billion worldwide, while Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil opened to more than $108 million globally. Mario proved there is still huge demand for popular gaming characters and worlds done right, while Resident Evil showed that audiences will also turn up for something darker and much less interested in playing it safe.
