The UK has joined the unenviable group of nations under fire emergencies.

We have reported here on TGP about how the French Gironde wildfire is threatening several sites linked to weapons and missile production, and how emergency services are scrambling to avoid an even much worse catastrophe.

Now, across the channel, things are also looking grim.

Today, it arose that Britain’s biggest nuclear power station is on alert over a large wildfire raging just three miles away.

The Telegraph reported:

“Around 120 firefighters and 18 fire engines are battling a blaze at Dunwich Heath, near Leiston, a few miles from the Sizewell B nuclear plant, which provides 3 per cent of the UK’s electricity needs.

EDF, which operates the plant, said that it was ‘continuing to monitor the situation’ and insisted there was no cause for concern about the site’s safety because the wind was not blowing southwards.

However, a nuclear industry source warned that if the wind changed direction and started blowing smoke towards Sizewell B it could force the station to stop electricity generation. There is also a risk of the smoke clogging up the filters of the site’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, which draws air from outside.”

Hundreds of properties have been evacuated as firefighters tackle the large heathland blaze.”
