Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) is currently making Jacob Gallagher’s (Joe-Warren Plant) life a living hell in Emmerdale – but he isn’t the only person on her list of people to target.
Returning to the ITV soap earlier this year, Doctor Todd is taking great pleasure in destroying Jacob’s confidence. It began at Hotten General Hospital, but moved to the confines of the village when Caitlin moved in with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick).
As she got settled into Tug Ghyll, Caitlin began spinning a narrative about Jacob in front of a concerned Vanessa and Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker).
She started to suggest that Jacob is obsessed with her. Vanessa and Manpreet have both been surprised by the claim, but believe Caitlin due to the fact she either orchestrates situations that leave Jacob in a difficult position, or she completely lies to their faces about conversations they’ve had.
Jacob has tried and tried to prove Doctor Todd’s bullying, but she is constantly a step ahead of him. Her meticulous ways prove that she will do whatever it takes to ensure no-one discovers the truth about her, and star Caroline Harker has confirmed Doctor Todd is capable of a lot more.
‘Wait and see’, she teased.
‘She can go darker’.
Doctor Todd’s latest victim is Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins). The surgeon knows that baby Leyla isn’t actually Jacob and Sarah Sugden’s (Katie Hill) daughter, and is using this secret to her advantage.
And suffice to say she’s enjoying every single second.
She’s decided to try and extort money out of Charity in exchange for her silence. We’ve seen from her feud with Jacob that Caitlin won’t back down from a fight, which certainly suggests she’s going to succeed in her plan to destroy Charity’s life.
But once Charity has fallen to her knees after facing the wrath of Doctor Todd, who would she target next?
Caroline has been pondering over this.
‘If she gets the money and is living in her house and she gets a bit bored, she’ll ask Manpreet round and she’ll move on there’, the actress said.

More trouble lies ahead for Vanessa and Charity...
Charity has tried her best to warn Vanessa off Doctor Todd, but her comments aren’t swaying her just yet.
Actress Emma Atkins has explained exactly how Charity feels when she watches her ex with Doctor Todd, confirming that her soap alter ego definitely feels worried…but also jealous.
‘I think a bit of both, to be honest. She’s genuinely worried because she feels Todd’s got an agenda, and she doesn’t know at this point. But yeah, she is both, I think. I don’t know about jealousy, but there’s a moment where we’re in the toilets where it suggests there could be a moment between them but, I mean, it’s human, isn’t it?
‘It’s human nature to feel that sometimes when you’ve been with someone that you really love and then see someone else with them and you’re like, “Oh, I feel funny about that”. But the majority of it is just genuine concern.’
Revealing that Charity has ‘a lot of love for Vanessa still’, Emma has shared that she’d like her character to team up with Vanessa to bring Todd down -but there’s quite a big hurdle in her way at the moment!
‘Yeah, there’s moments where I imagine that they could plant that as well because she’s got a lot of love for Vanessa still. I don’t necessarily know whether she’s still in love or not, but she cares so much for her.
‘She doesn’t want her to get hurt and then obviously when she walks into the house and Todd says, “Get out of my house”, which is brilliant. Brilliantly done. She’s like, “This is Vanessa’s house!”
‘Charity lived there years ago. So, she’s just, “I’m onto you!” but she can’t do anything because she’s being held to ransom. So, it’s brilliant. It’s such a fantastic storyline to play.’
While Vanessa has fallen pretty hard for Doctor Todd, Caroline has all but confirmed there will be heartbreak for the much loved character on the horizon, as Doctor Todd’s focus to create havoc is far stronger than a want to explore a potential romance.
‘I think that she doesn’t mean it genuinely in the first place. Between you and me, I think she does. But she doesn’t know how to do love and things. But actually, I think it is genuine, but the desire to do dodgy things is stronger. Poor old Vanessa!’.
‘I think she’s just scratching the surface about the Dingles. I mean, what she’s finding out on a daily basis… I think she probably doesn’t sleep much, planning what she could do to other people.
Caroline added: ‘I think she’s occupied, very focused in that forensic surgeon way. I think she’s focused on that. She’ll see that through. She’s seen Jacob through. One thing at a time. But yeah, if she was there for long enough, ooh she could do some damage!’.
Because Charity cannot raise the funds herself for Caitlin, she heads to see Kim Tate (Claire King) and offers her share of the Woolpack at a discounted price. A shock move from Charity – and it’s one that leaves Kim very intrigued.
Star Emma Atkins explained further: ‘She’s like, “Why?” Charity’s not willing to divulge, she’s like, “You don’t need to know”. Kim’s like, “Oh, I think I do. Nobody in their right mind would sell their share of this great hub, the epicentre of the village, why?” “You don’t need to know,” and she will not let the guard down, she won’t let her mask slip.
‘She’s just suggesting that she wants less responsibility in her life, and obviously the audience will know why. So, yeah, she’s definitely suspicious. At the moment, I think she is the only one.’
If she sells, Charity’s heart will be broken, but as Emma shares, she has no choice. Charity is so determined to keep the truth about baby Leyla hidden, she really will do whatever it takes.
‘She just puts on this facade. Kim, you’re amazing. Take my business, do with it what you want. It’s the epicentre of the village, if anyone can run this place, you can”. And behind all that, she’s going, “She’s so awful!” Because at the end she leaves and she goes, “I’ll be the decider of that. I’ll let you know,” and she walks out and Charity’s like… So it’s all of that. It’s a poker face, isn’t it?
‘She will do whatever she needs to do to keep the secret hidden, so there’s no worry for her to do that. But yeah, inside she’s raging. Raging!’.
