As Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker), Emmerdale’s rapist bully and demon doctor, lay on the floor of Jacob’s Fold, blood gushing from her head afterbreathing her last, naturally fans first question was: ‘what now?!’.
Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), having experienced the brutal effects of Todd’s incessant workplace bullying of her husband Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant), walked in just as Todd’s final showdown with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) was winding up, and what she heard sickened her.
As a struggle ensued and Todd remained unrepentant, a shove from Sarah saw Todd’s head collide with a table, before she collapsed to the floor and died almost instantly, making Sarah a killer and Charity a witness.
While the Dingles aren’t known for their strict adherence to the law, murder isn’t one of their routinely committed crimes, and, according to Emmerdale boss Laura Shaw, the fall out for both women is going to be seismic.
‘They are locked in a secret and that’s going to be long-lasting and going forward, that’s going to affect their relationship,’ she said.
‘Obviously, there’s still the baby secret to come out at some point.’
Ah, the baby secret.
The one that could well pack enough of a punch to destroy the Dingle clan forever: that Charity’s surrogate pregnancy, during which it was believed that she was carrying Sarah and Jacob’s baby via IVF, was actually the result of a drunken one night stand with Ross Barton (Michael Parr).
While a few people became aware of the secret, Sarah still believes she’s raising her own child, though, what with this being soapland, she’s bound discover the truth sooner or later.
‘It’s got to happen at some point, and how that will affect the story with regards to the murder and Todd? You’ll have to wait and see,’ Laura told The Mirror.
The good news? We know the secret will eventually be revealed. The bad news? We could all be waiting a while for the inevitably delicious Dingle drama that will ensue!
The final showdown between Todd and Charity was incredibly powerful, and though Todd sauntered in believing she held all the cards and that the power she wielded over Charity was unshakeable, she severely underestimated the will to survive that burns bright at Charity’s core, a flame that had been dampened, but not fully put out.
Todd’s attack was vile: she demeaned Charity’s experience and tried to frame what’d happened as a drunken fumble, before accusing Charity of making a mockery of other women who’d suffered sexual assaults and rapes and threatening litigation should Charity continue to accuse her of a crime she – absolutely did – commit.
Though Charity initially reacted violently, she soon calmed down, and as she explained about the past rapes she’d endured, her words seemed to strike a chord with Todd, who’s spell was finally broken and she lost all of the power she believed she held.
As Charity made her demands that Todd never darken the village with her presence again, Sarah had entered, unseen by the other women, and struggled to process what she’d heard.
As Todd made to leave, Sarah was incensed and demanded she stay and pay for what she’d done, despite Charity’s sad admittance that the police would take no action over what’d been inflicted on her.
Fuelled with rage and pain, Sarah ultimately shoved Todd, causing the collision with the table that ultimately killed her.
The future looks bleak for Sarah: she’s now locked in a painful secret with Charity, with only the two of them aware of how Todd came to die, and she’ll also inevitably discover her grandma’s betrayal and baby Leyla’s true origins.
