Matt Owens, the showrunner for Netflix’s live-action One Piece, has discussed the production of the series’ first season with creator Eiichiro Oda.

The series’ performance contrasts with previous Netflix anime adaptations. Projects such as Death Note and Cowboy Bebop failed to achieve similar longevity or critical acclaim and were canceled shortly after their debuts. In contrast, the One Piece live-action series marks a significant departure from the streamer’s earlier track record with the genre.

Franchise Expansion and Future Production

The success of the live-action adaptation has facilitated a broader expansion of the One Piece intellectual property on Netflix. This includes a complete remake of the original anime series currently in progress.

Titled The One Piece, the remake is being produced by WIT Studio and is scheduled for a 2027 release. This new animation project aims to provide a modern, streamlined take on the early arcs of the story, further cementing the franchise’s presence on the platform alongside the live-action series.
