Drag Race Philippines star Misua, who was a beloved queen among the Filipino drag community, has died at the age of 27.
Misua, whose real name is Jason Elvie Ty, was set to appear in season four of the show which had just started filming.
The news of her death was confirmed by World of Wonder, the production team behind the Drag Race franchise and show. A cause of death has not yet been announced.
In a statement, World of Wonder said: ‘We are heartbroken to share that Misua, a talented Queen set to appear on season four of Drag Race Philippines passed away in her sleep the morning of April 2.
‘She brought light, artistry, and joy to those around her, and she will be deeply missed.
‘We have paused production to care for and support our cast and crew during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who loved her.
‘We are in contact with her family who have asked for privacy during this hard time.’
Reacting to this post, several drag queens shared their condolences in the comments section.
Hannah Conda, who finished runner up on season two of Ru Paul’s Drag Race said: ‘Absolutely heartbreaking! My thoughts are with my Filo family. I love you all and sending my love! She was an absolute star!’
Cheryl, who was a contestant on the UK version in 2019, also said: ‘My thoughts are with everyone, especially Misua & her loved ones,’ as Blu Hydrangea added: ‘Devastating! Sending all my love to everyone involved.’
Misua’s family also left a tribute on Facebook, writing: ‘Jayson was our dearly loved son, brother, friend, mentor, and most of all, Jayson is a star. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and close friends.’
According to her bio, which was obtained by Variety, Misua described herself as ‘a talented and deeply creative queen from Cagayan de Oro, whose drag was rooted in fashion, artistry, and self-expression’.
She continued: ‘A graphic designer by profession and a performer for eight years, she is known for creating nearly every aspect of her drag herself — from her outfits, hair, and nails to props and visual content — reflecting her extraordinary creativity and eye for detail.’
Season three of Drag Race Philippines aired last year with Maxie being crowned the winner, while Khianna finished as the runner-up. Season four is due to air later this year.
