Disney+ Remake of Emmy-Winning FX Spy Drama Show in Works With Squid Game Star

A new international remake of a critically acclaimed spy drama is moving forward at Disney+, starring a Squid Game actor. It brings a familiar premise into a different cultural and political setting. With major casting already in place, the project signals a fresh take on an award-winning series.

A reimagining of The Americans in works at Dinsey+

According to Variety, Disney+ has begun production on The Koreans, a reimagining of the FX series The Americans, with Lee Byung-hun and Han Jimin starring as North Korean spies living undercover in South Korea.

Set in the early 1990s during South Korea’s democratization and cultural modernization, the series follows a middle-class family hiding a treasonous secret. While they appear ordinary, both parents are elite agents working to destabilize the South.

The story follows the couple as they navigate loyalty to their homeland, identity, and family bonds. A Korean counterintelligence agent closes in on them. Lee Byung-hun, known for Squid Game and No Other Choice, stars alongside Han Jimin, known for Heavenly Ever After and Love Scout. Ahn Gilho directs the project. Park Eunkyo writes the adaptation based on the original series created by Joe Weisberg.

Eric Schrier said, “I was the guy who developed The Americans,” and added he was “a little hesitant” about the remake due to his connection with the original creators. He explained that “the similarities of the two premises… started to make sense to me,” citing the shift to a Korean context. He also noted the project emerged organically from Disney’s Korean content partnerships.

The original series starred Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys and ran from 2013 to 2018. It earned 18 Primetime Emmy nominations and won four awards. It also won the Golden Globe for best drama in 2019. The show received AFI TV Program of the Year honors across five seasons. Schrier confirmed that the original creators and stars approved the remake.
