Disclosure Day Writer Answers 1 of the Biggest Questions About Aliens in Sci-Fi Movie

Disclosure Day’s screenwriter has addressed one of the movie’s biggest talking points: the aliens’ stereotypical design. Following its release, many had wondered about the reasoning behind their look. The co-writer has now offered a reasonable explanation.

What the Disclosure Day writer revealed about the film’s mysterious aliens

After receiving criticism for the aliens’ design in Disclosure Day, screenwriter David Koepp shared why he and writer-director Steven Spielberg decided to keep it that way.

“I think that that was important to both Steven and I,” Koepp told Screen Rant. “Steven first said, ‘I want to respect the lore that’s out there. There’s a cultural memory of how things are and what might have happened. And I don’t want to fly in the face of that.’”

Notably, the aliens featured in the movie do not particularly have an original look. Their simple, classic design has appeared in movies and urban legends for decades. Throughout Disclosure Day, the extraterrestrials are often depicted as animals, such as a fox, a deer, a raccoon, and a red cardinal. Their true form isn’t revealed until the final act of the movie.

When it is finally revealed, the creatures are shown to have greyish skin, slender bodies, lean fingers, large heads, and bulbous black eyes. Their design bears some resemblance to aliens from Spielberg’s 1977 movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Koepp further explained that they were not making a movie that claimed everything people had always thought was wrong. Instead, they wanted to make something that suggested everything people had always thought before was right and that there is “abundant proof” to back it up.

The writer added that they could have created a completely new design that would redefine the existing expectations. However, he said that their latest attempt was to acknowledge the decades-long mystery surrounding extraterrestrials, which still remains secret.

Disclosure Days is currently running in theaters globally.
