The ceiling was already quite high beforehand, but the overwhelming and startling popularity that Batman boasts has skyrocketed into another stratosphere in the last couple of years due to Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman. It’s not as if Batman’s never enjoyed the fruits of a creative and novel Elseworlds continuity existing alongside mainline, Earth-0 DC comics—Batman: The Imposter, Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham, or Dark Knights of Steel, to name a few—yet Absolute Batman is a different beast altogether.
