Days of Our Lives’ Peter Reckell on the Aftermath of John Black’s Death

It seems not everyone has yet recovered from John Black’s (Drake Hogestyn) death in Days of Our Lives, including Bo (Peter Reckell), who appears to be the most shaken. He recently spoke about the aftermath of John Black’s death and even shed some light on his long-standing dynamic with Marlena in a recent interview.

After months of delaying the inevitable, Days of Our Lives finally addressed John Black’s death last week. The writers managed to end his arc on a high note. John Black’s selfless actions allowed Bo to survive and return to Days of Our Lives. This also preserved John Black’s legacy.

Speaking about John Black’s death and Bo’s gratitude to him, Peter Reckell told Sopa Opera Digest, “After Hope tells Bo what happened and finds out about John’s memorial service, Bo has to convince her that he has to go to it….He needs to go and talk to Marlena, because of the guilt he’s feeling…John made an amazing sacrifice, and Bo wants to tell Marlena that he will be forever grateful to him. Because of John’s sacrifice, not only is he going to live, but [the drugs] are also going to save other people’s lives, too.”

Reckell emphasized that the writers did a great job with Black’s character. They wrote him off as a hero. He is someone to be remembered and celebrated. “So the character of John went out a hero. I think the writers did a good job with that,” he added.

In this interview, Reckell also spoke about the powerful moment he shared with Marlena (Diedra Hall) at John’s funeral. “I go to Dee…We have like two sentences, and it’s just us looking at each other. And, as always with her, the connection is immediate and deep, and powerful. I’m looking into her eyes and seeing the pain in them, and she’s looking into mine,” Reckell added.

He further compared this scene with one from 1984, which also featured Reckell and Hall. Peter Reckell concluded by recalling some moments with Drake Hogestyn, who passed away in September 2024.
