CXMT Corporation (688825.SS)
The report, which cites sources familiar with the matter, says CXMT plans to establish a research and development production line for NAND flash memory at its new Beijing plant. The company has also set up a research institute in the capital, with NAND development listed among its active projects.
The timing matters. AI-driven demand has created a global memory shortage that industry executives expect to last through at least 2027.
Competition Heats Up
The move would bring CXMT into direct competition with some of the biggest names in memory chips. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron dominate the global NAND market. On the domestic side, YMTC has long been China’s leading NAND manufacturer.
CXMT has traditionally focused on DRAM, while YMTC has focused on NAND. Now both companies are crossing into each other’s territory as tight supply keeps pricing firm and domestic demand grows.
CXMT has already held discussions with potential customers about its NAND plans. One of those customers is a newly established startup that plans to use CXMT chips in storage products built for AI systems and supercomputers.
Why Flash Memory, Why Now
Memory makers globally have been prioritizing DRAM and high-bandwidth memory for AI applications. That shift has left NAND production underinvested, tightening supply and opening a window for new entrants.
CXMT entering NAND would broaden its product lineup and widen its customer base. It also positions the company to meet growing demand from Chinese buyers looking for domestic alternatives to overseas suppliers.
The Reuters report noted it is still unclear when the R&D production line will begin operating. It is also unknown whether CXMT will move from trial production into large-scale commercial manufacturing.
CXMT stock was trading at CNY 55.29 at the time of the report, up 3.4% on the day.
