We’re not saying there’s a right way to deal with your mum being banged up for murder, but we’re pretty sure Bethany Platt’s (Lucy Fallon) way in Coronation Street wasn’t it!
While Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) is languishing behind bars for bashing Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) around the bonce, sending him to a splattery end on the street below, her daughter, Bethany, has been trying to hold everything together – including Sarah’s now ex-fiance, Kit Green (Jacob Roberts).
Although it looked as if Kit would seek solace in the arms of local loony, Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown), he actually found it in the arms of his ex’s daughter, Bethany herself.
Bit weird? Bit icky? Bit perfect for the dramz? Absolutely!
Speaking exclusively to Metro at the Inside Soap awards, we asked Lucy how she feels Bethany will handle the very sticky situation she’s found herself in.
‘It’s a bit of a tricky one, you don’t want to really be sleeping with your mum’s boyfriend, especially when your mum is in prison! Listen, we’ve all been there!’ she joked.
‘I think she’s going to take this really bad,’ she said on a more serious note.
‘I think Bethany’s nature is quite caring, and she’s a nice person, I don’t think she’s a malicious person.
‘She’s got to deal with the consequences, and I think eventually it is going to eat her alive and she’s going to need to tell her mum what she’s done.’
Now, when it comes to Bethany and Kit’s sweaty secret, there’s good news and bad news.
The good? Only one other person knows what happened.
The bad? It’s the aforementioned arch-manipulator and the kind of enemy nightmares are made of: Jodie.
So will Bethany get the chance to confess all to her mum, or will the wicked witch of Weatherfield beat her to it?
‘To be fair, we’ve not got that far in the story yet. At the moment, where we are, Sarah still doesn’t know.
‘I don’t know whether it’s going to be Jodie, or someone else, or if Bethany will break the news.
‘I think, in my opinion, Bethany won’t be able to keep it in for that long, especially what’s to come. I think it’s going to add a spanner to the works.’
Another spanner?!
It’s not the only secret Kit has been hiding, and the other thing that’s weighing so heavily on him? Bethany knows nothing about.
Kit has recently been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, and with only Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) knowing the truth, Kit has been suffering primarily in silence.
How does Lucy think Bethany would react where she to learn what’s really going on with Kit?
‘Bethany is a nice and caring person, so I think, if she finds out that Kit has cancer, that will be really shocking,’ Lucy admitted.
‘But she’s also been onto the fact something’s been wrong before they slept together, I think she knew that something was going on so I think, for her, it’s probably going to be an: ‘okay, that’s the reason why you’ve been behaving the way that you have.’
‘She’s a caring person, I think she’s going to want to look after him especially while her mum is not there, but it does add an awkward tinge to it as she’s slept with him.’
We think that might be a bit of an understatement, Lucy!
