Just a year back, the Chicago White Sox were the punchline of baseball. They didn’t just lose; they simply collapsed night after night. By the end of the season, the losses had snowballed into 121 games lost. Brutal! But this kind of history etches deep into the franchise’s dignity.

Now, here in 2025, there is suddenly someone who is trying to steal this infamous spotlight from the White Sox. It’s none other than the Colorado Rockies. Even after a rare sweep of the Marlins, they still entered June 7 with a 12-51 record. They matched the worst start to a season since 1901. They have been shut out eight times, swept in ten series, and lost 13 games by five or more runs.

So it’s not a slump; it is a disaster. And so you might think that the White Sox are secretly hoping that their nightmare might just be erased by the Rockies’ disaster-free fall, right? Well, think again, because it turns out it’s far from it.

White Sox GM Chris Getz got real with USA TODAY Sports, “I hope they don’t break the record. I don’t wish that upon anyone. I really don’t.” There is a sense of shared trauma they have with the 1.475 billion team. And this sentiment isn’t just limited to the GM but runs through the clubhouse. Andrew Benintendi, who endured every rough outing of the past season, too, said, “No one wants to see that. You don’t feel for guys while you’re playing, but off the field, you do. I know they’re in a pretty tough division, but there are still a lot of games left. I hope they don’t lose that many games. I’m just glad it’s not us again right now. Clearly, he understands what losing that many games does to a player, to a clubhouse, and the entire franchise.

It’s not that the Chicago White Sox suddenly became a contender—they’re still fighting uphill with a 22–43 record—but compared to the Rockies, they look like the ’27 Yankees. At least the 2023 White Sox were in games. They had 29 one-run losses and blew dozens of leads. But they still have a heart to understand. Miguel Vargas said, “You’re blessed to play in the big leagues… But when you’re losing like that, man—it’s tough. You just can’t let it crush you.” One thing is for sure: by their words, it’s certain that they feel empathy. And it is understandable; they have lived through the grind of showing up, giving effort, and going home empty-handed. One thing is for sure: when both teams face each other in Denver, there won’t be any kind of mockery—just maybe a quiet understanding.

Shane Smith might be the lone Chicago White Sox all-star

Let’s face it — when a team’s sitting dead last in the AL, one is not expecting an all-star buzz. But then every team needs a rep, and for the White Sox, they have a guy who is not just worthy but might also be the best rookie pitcher in the league right now. Enter Shane Smith! The 24-year-old was brought from the Rule 5 Draft after the Milwaukee Brewers left him unprotected. And he has since been quietly heating up for Chicago.

Through 12 starts, he owns a good 2.45 ERA with 60 strikeouts and just over 62 innings. Not shabby for a kid who was not expected to crack the rotation this season, right? He made his MLB debut on April 1 against the Twins and immediately grabbed eyeballs. 5. 2 innings, two earned runs, and a presence that screamed a confident “I am here” vibe. And he has kept this energy throughout the season now.

Smith, after his latest outing where he silenced the Detroit Tigers, said, “I just try to give my team a shot… That’s all I can control.” But he is humble in saying so, because he is doing more than that. He is making the hitters look lost. He is also showing a caliber that’s way past his years. It’s been a while since the White Sox have had a rookie all-star pitcher in their franchise history. Not Chris Sale, not Rodon, but Smith. He can also be the first rookie all-star for the team since José Abreu in 2014.

In a year that’s rather unmemorable for the White Sox, Smith’s rise is one of the only bright spots. Do you think so too? Do you think he will land an all-star nod? Let us know.
