This group of cinema fans got more than they bargained for at a screening for one of the most anticipated horror films of the year.
Due for release in April, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is a sequel to 2019’s Ready or Not, in which Samara Weaving plays a bride whose new, wealthy in-laws have sinister ideas about wedding night fun.
Before officially welcoming Grace into the fold, they explain that she must play a game within the walls of their luxurious estate – but it’s a far cry from Monopoly, as she finds herself being hunted by relatives armed with guns and crossbows and forced to hide until dawn.
It’s fair to say the first film has a decent amount of bloodshed, so perhaps early audiences for the sequel were expecting it the second time around.
They probably just didn’t think they would need to prepare to be the ones covered in it.
In a clip that has since gone viral, cinema-goers found themselves splattered with fake blood during a private viewing, catching the whole theatre by total surprise.
Shared on X, the video captures one gory scene when Grace appears to be trapped beneath a man with a knife that is quickly making its way towards her.
But just as he goes to stab, a blood-like liquid splatters out across the room, soaking everyone in their seats.
Thankfully, they appeared to have been given some forewarning, as attendees were wearing ponchos.
Still, that didn’t stop them from screaming when the gunge came down on their heads – talk about immersive viewing!
It’s unclear what happens next in the film itself, as the camera pans back to the big screen to show another character freaking out, but we’ll have to wait and see whether it’s Grace or someone else who met their demise.
Still, it’s got people hyped for when the film is officially released, with @SirJeanSimon declaring it a ‘genius marketing move’.
‘okay but can they do this with every horror movie???? that would be SO cool’, wrote @sinobite, with @BigHitGlen agreeing: ‘This is the correct way to watch the horror genre’.
While some emphatically stated that they’d ‘hate’ such a realistic cinema experience, and others declared ‘no thanks’, most were totally up for it, and even jealous not to have been present.
‘Omg I’d love this’, tweeted @AMangled, while @cinemetary said: ‘idc if something good happened to y’all should’ve been me instead’.
As well as Weaving reprising her role, Ready or Not 2 also stars Kathryn Newton as Faith MacCaullay, Grace’s estranged younger sister, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Ursula Danforth, Shawn Hatosy as Titus Danforth, David Cronenberg as head of the family Chester Danforth, and Elijah Wood as ‘the Lawyer’.
Its plot follows Grace after learning that victory comes with a price, with the most affluent families on earth now trying to kill her in a new game. If they fail, they lose their power and fortune.
A synopsis teases that, at first, Grace refuses to participate, but she’s soon left with no choice after discovering her little sister has been ‘marked for death’ and she must ‘protect her at all costs’.
Fans have high expectations of the sequel, since the first instalment grossed $57.6million (£43.1m) worldwide against a $6m (£4.5m) budget and became a real favourite of the genre.
Already, critics have given it a very respectable 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with initial reviews after a premiere at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on March 13 bestowing high praise on the Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett creation.
‘It’s bigger, bloodier, and more chaotic—exactly what a sequel like this should be,’ writes Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon.net.
Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com also compliments the ‘wickedly fun ensemble’ and Weaving’s ‘engaged’ performance as a lead.
Fred Topel of United Press International adds that Ready or Not 2 ‘recaptures the magic’ of its predecessor, which isn’t common when it comes to sequels.
Ross Bonaime of Collider adds: ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come throws us back into this universe now that we know the scale and possibilities of it, and goes absolutely wild with what can happen.’
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come will be released in the US on March 20 and in the UK on April 10.
