Chris Hansen revealed his casting preference for A24’s Primetime during an interview on the Serialously with Annie Elise podcast. The former To Catch a Predator host confirmed he had no involvement in the film’s production. He also shared that Robert Pattinson was not his personal choice for the role.

Hansen told host Annie Elise that he once envisioned a different actor portraying him on screen. He said, “I always thought, I had discussions years ago, I had crafted a script, and I thought Denis Leary would be a good guy to play me, depending on the age of it all.” The journalist acknowledged that Pattinson is a popular actor but expressed reservations about the project.

Hansen also questioned the motivations behind the A24 production. He said, “Obviously they want a commercial endeavor to succeed and they think this is the way it’s going to succeed.” The former host added, “My suspicion is that they used my name because it helps in a commercial enterprise.” He confirmed that the filmmakers reached out a couple of months before the interview.

The 66-year-old revealed that A24 contacted his team about participating in the project. He recalled, “A couple months ago they came out and said, hey, look, we’re doing this. We’d like you to have some sort of consideration in terms of helping us with this.” Despite this outreach, Hansen did not serve as a consultant during filming.

Hansen confirmed he will attend a private screening before sharing his full assessment. Primetime stars Pattinson alongside Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers, Anna Faris, and Creed Bratton. Director Lance Oppenheim’s film arrives in theaters on September 25, 2026.
