With another Downton Abbey film coming out in 2025, many fans have questions about Charlie Cox’s character in the franchise. Cox has gained a significant fandom since his time on Downton Abbey and recently appeared as Daredevil in Daredevil: Born Again. But was Charlie Cox a major enough character to have a comeback in Downton Abbey?
Who did Charlie Cox play in the Downton Abbey series?
Charlie Cox played the role of Philip Villiers, Duke of Crowborough, in Downton Abbey in the very first season of the show. He appeared in the pilot episode as a friend of the Crawleys. He came to Downton Abbey with the prospect of marrying Lady Mary Crawley, who was originally supposed to marry her cousin, Patrick Crawley.
It turned out that Philip had a romantic relationship with the then-footman Thomas Barrow, who also brought him to Downton Abbey with a telegram luring him to marry Mary for the Grantham money. Thomas had planned to become Philip’s valet after the wedding. But when it did not work out, he tried to blackmail Philip using the love letters he had received from him.
The Duke managed to burn the letters and left Downton Abbey for good the next morning.
Will Charlie Cox appear in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale film?
Given that Cox’s character appeared only once and played a minor role in the series’ broader narrative, it is highly unlikely that he will return for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. While his popularity has grown significantly since then, especially due to Daredevil, there have been no reports suggesting a comeback. Still, fans can hope for a surprise appearance, even if the chances are slim.
Moreover, the movie is releasing on September 12, 2025. If Charlie Cox were in the film, there would have been reports about it already. Anyhow, fans can still hope for the best possible outcome, and perhaps a great Downton Abbey film.
