Charli XCX and Green Day‘s playful Coachella rivalry escalated during Weekend Two. Following Charli’s bold “Miss Should Be Headliner” sash debut at Weekend One, Green Day members fired back with witty responses that delighted fans on both sides.
Here’s what happened to Charli XCX and Green Day
Charli XCX started a faux feud with Green Day members after she sported a sash on Coachella Weekend 1 that read, “Miss Should Be Headliner.” On Weekend 2, Green Day’s Tré Cool posed with a sash made of tissue rolls that read, “Actually Headliner.”
The lead vocalist and guitarist of Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong, also acknowledged Charli XCX’s banter. The Grammy-winning artist wore a neon green baseball “Brat” cap during their Coachella performance.
Charli took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to Green Day’s clapback, writing, “obsessed.” The hilarious banter of the musicians prompted fans to praise Green Day’s witty spirit. A fan of “Speed Drive” singer posted on X, “Green Day referencing (sic) Charli XCX with an “Actual Headliner” sash and a BRAT hat during their Coachella show last night. This is how you play!”
Another impressed fan gushed, “Billie Joe Armstrong wearing a brat hat during the Green Day Coachella set to shade Charlie XCX is a power move no one thought he’d pull.” A third fan echoed similar sentiments, writing, “You can’t tell me there’s not a little shade going on; Green Day are the original brats.”
Meanwhile, Green Day’s open support for Palestine during their Coachella performance has garnered positive responses across social media platforms. While performing “Jesus of Suburbia,” Armstrong changed the original lyrics of the song in Week 1.
To bring more awareness to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, the 53-year-old star sang, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine/ Tales from another broken home.” On Weekend 2, Armstrong altered the lyrics of “Jesus of Suburbia” and sang, “Am I re——, or am I just J.D. Vance?” The lyrics originally said, “Am I re—— or am I just overjoyed?” (via Rolling Stone)
