Buddy: Cristin Milioti’s Killer Unicorn Movie Gets Surprising Video Game Spin-off, Watch Trailer

Cristin Milioti’s killer unicorn movie Buddy is getting a surprising video game spin-off. ModRetro has announced Buddy: The Video Game inspired by the film’s twisted children’s show. The first teaser trailer has been dropped online.

The game will bring Buddy’s colorful world to the ModRetro Chromatic later this year. It will also be fully compatible with the Game Boy Color.

What do we see in the trailer for the Buddy video game?

The 50-second teaser trailer for Buddy: The Video Game introduces the title with a colorful 1990s children’s show aesthetic. The tone quickly turns darker when the orange unicorn mascot tells a frightened child, “It’s your chance to be brave. You got to be scared to be brave.”

The footage then cuts between pixel-art visuals, dialogue scenes, top-down exploration, and arcade-style horror gameplay.

Buddy: The Video Game will feature four different modes.

Story Mode: follows the movie’s story and lets players choose whether to appease Buddy or defy him.
Survival Mode: has players run, hide, and search for resources while Buddy hunts them.
Buddy Mode: lets players control the orange unicorn and hunt children.
Mini Game Mode: features activities based on the fictional children’s show, including dancing, painting, dusting, and riding.

Developed by playinstinct and published by ModRetro, the game is targeted for Q4 2026. The title will launch on a physical cartridge for the ModRetro Chromatic.

Casper Kelly directs Buddy and co-wrote the film with Jamie King. Tyler Davidson, Drew Sykes, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz and Tracy Rosenblum produced the movie. The cast includes MMilioti, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt and Michael Shannon. Topher Grace and Keegan-Michael Key also appear in the film.

Buddy opens exclusively in theaters on August 28 through Roadside Attractions and Saban Films. The game will follow with its planned late-2026 release.
