“Bonfire of the Vanities” Stalls At Apple

Back in April, the news came that “The Batman” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” filmmaker Matt Reeves is set to direct an eight-episode Apple TV series adaptation of the famed Tom Wolfe 1987 New York society satire novel “The Bonfire of the Vanities”.

“Boston Legal” and “Big Little Lies” creator David E. Kelley, who previously worked with Apple TV on “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” and “Presumed Innocent,” is set to pen and executive produce the series.

Today, Deadline reports that after months in development, the streamer has opted not to proceed with it.

Their sources say “the parties were not creatively aligned, and Kelley was not happy about how the project had been handled.”

As a result, production companies Warner Bros. Television and David E. Kelley Productions will be shopping it to other buyers shortly.

The original novel is a drama about ambition, racism, social class, politics, and greed in 1980s New York City and centers on various characters.

It primarily focuses on white yuppie Wall Street bond trader Sherman McCoy, whose life falls apart after a hit-and-run incident with a young black man in the Bronx while his mistress was driving the car.

Reeves is also executive producing via his 6th and Idaho Productions label. Sarah Geismer and Matthew Tinker will executive produce.

Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, Bruce Willis, Kim Cattrall, F. Murray Abraham and Morgan Freeman starred in the previous 1990 film adaptation, which was both a critical and commercial bomb.
