Even the most loyal Jim Jarmusch fans were left perplexed by The Limits of Control, his 2009 thriller about a nameless assassin (Isaach de Bankolé) on a mission in Spain. Boasting an impressive ensemble that includes Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Gael García Bernal, the film was nevertheless criticized for its snail-like pace and near-impenetrable plot. Yet the critical response assumes that this is a straightforward movie, and not Jarmusch's ultimate experimentation in paring narrative storytelling down to its barest essentials. For a director whose work has always been characterized by minimalism, The Limits of Control is some kind of minimalist magnum opus.
