Ben Affleck Wants Matt Damon to ‘Hold Back a Little’ Amid Viral Shirtless Pic

Photos of a shirtless and chiseled Matt Damon from the set of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey have gone viral. And now, his childhood friend and fellow actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck has commented on it. During an appearance on the April 22nd edition of the Today show, Affleck humorously urged Damon to “hold back a little.”

Affleck appeared on the Today Show with co-star Jon Bernthal to promote their movie The Accountant 2. When the host put up side-by-side photos of a shirtless Damon and Jon Bernthal in a sweatshirt, Affleck jokingly remarked, “Jon has taste, class,” adding, “Matt, soon as the first time he got in shape in his life, whipped his shirt off. He was like, ‘Who can I show this off to?!’ I was like, ‘You wanna just hold back a little?’”

This isn’t the first time that Affleck answered questions about his reaction to Damon’s shirtless photos. At the premiere of The Accountant 2 in Los Angeles, Affleck teased Damon and told Access Hollywood, “This is the face that’s like they just told him there were photographers out there, so he’s like, ‘I’m flexing my abs.’” More seriously, Affleck added that he was “impressed” that Damon looked “pretty good.” The Gone Girl actor said, “As you get on in life, it’s less and less easy to do this, as I can tell you, and he is getting it done.”

Notably, Damon is 54 and Affleck is 52 at the time of this article’s composition. Affleck reportedly got into shape for The Accountant 2 and has spoken about how stunts for the sequel were challenging. Alffleck portrayed Bruce Wayne / Batman in the DCEU, a role that required him to be heavily muscular. Meanwhile, Damon has appeared in his share of action movies, including the Jason Bourne franchise.

The Odyssey premieres in U.S. theaters in July 2026.
