While some may argue that he's long outstayed his welcome in recent years, Taika Waititi is still theoretically a great success story. He broke into the Hollywood big leagues by remaining true to his outsized comic personality and fundamentally reworking whatever project he was involved in with his irreverent improv sensibilities. His star has somewhat dimmed thanks to the chaotic disappointment of Thor: Love and Thunder and a sense that he's fallen too hard into his own shtick, but his approach used to be endlessly charming. This was evident with the release of his debut film, a short film called Two Cars, One Night, which was nominated for the Best Short Film Oscar and is a far more formally playful presentation of his ideas than many of his future bigger films.
