Avengers: Doomsday’s Robert Downey Jr. Explains His Biggest Reason for Returning to the MCU

Robert Downey Jr. has revealed what inspired his comeback to the MCU. The actor had previously bid farewell to the franchise after his iconic character, Tony Stark, died in Avengers: Endgame. He will now return in Avengers: Doomsday as the titular villain Doctor Doom.

During a recent guest appearance on the Avengers: Endgame special of the Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast, Downey Jr. explained his decision to return to the MCU.

“What brought me back was the opportunity to redefine the genre of superhero movies, so that’s a tall order,” the actor shared. “You know, Mr. Feige, you know the group, we love a challenge, and we figured, ‘Wow, let’s mix it up and see if we can get ourselves excited, because if we’re excited, the audience will soon follow.'”

Who is starring in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Robert Downey Jr.?

Avengers: Doomsday will see the epic team-up of the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men in an epic battle against Victor von Doom, played by Downey Jr.

The movie features a large ensemble cast, including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Danny Ramirez, and Anthony Mackie. Tom Hiddleston will appear as Loki. Also expected to return are Benedict Cumberbatch and Jeremy Renner.

The Fantastic Four cast, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, will return as well. The movie will also feature stars from the Black Panther film series, including Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Mabel Cadena, and Tenoch Huerta Mejía.

Meanwhile, the New Avengers cast includes Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman, and Hannah John-Kamen. Additionally, the original X-Men cast, including Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn, will also be present.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
