The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Coronation Street dated March 24. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.
Mal Roper (Tim Treloar) claimed he had remembered who put him in hospital during today’s episode of Coronation Street, but it wasn’t the right man.
Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) stalker Mal was attacked by Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) a few weeks ago. The local copper had discovered his mum’s ordeal with Mal, and of course resorted to not doing things by the book to try and teach him a lesson.
Mal met Bernie while she was drinking away her grief over Billy Mayhew’s death during a boozy night with the girls. He liked her straight away, and he was not shy about letting her know.
While Bernie refused to cheat on her devoted hubby Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin), she did indulge in some recreational drug taking with her new friend. The next day she woke up with the hangover from hell and a determination to never see Mal again.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Mal secured himself an electrician job at Roy Cropper’s (David Neilson) café in an attempt to see Bernie more, and didn’t leave her alone. She tried and tried to tell Mal that she wasn’t interested, but he didn’t seem to get the message.
After Mal’s attack, Bernie became the prime suspect.
Following a grilling down at the police station, she was released, and it didn’t take her long to get the truth out of Kit. Despite being outraged, she was ultimately forgiving and announced that she was going on holiday with Dev to Tenerife, urging Kit to keep his nose clean while she is on holiday.
Bernie and Dev returned to the cobbles yesterday, and Mal was immediately in both of their faces trying to find out what they got up to while abroad. The couple calmly told Mal to leave them alone but after a few attempts, Dev snapped and forced him to leave the café.
It wasn’t a violent confrontation, but the argument was witnessed by DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), who warned Dev about consequences if the same thing was to happen again.
This interaction is perhaps what pushed Mal to head to the station in today’s instalment. There, he claimed to Swain that he now remembers who attacked him.

The detective then headed to Dev’s shop and arrested him in front of a stunned Bernie and Chesney Brown (Sam Aston). As Dev was taken out of the shop, he told Bernie that he didn’t attack Mal. She responded and said that she knows, but Dev remains unaware that this was more than her trying to reassure him.
If Dev goes to prison, Mal’s warped hope that he stands a chance with Bernie is going to increase. That being said, if Kit confesses, his entire career is going to fall apart.
