Anne Hathaway & Dakota Johnson Made Verity More Erotic Than Originally Planned, Here’s How

Director Michael Showalter has revealed that Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson helped shape some of the most intimate scenes in Verity. The two actors took the movie in a more sensual direction than originally planned. 

During a conversation with Variety, Showalter explained how the two actresses worked with him to develop moments that added more tension and pushed the psychological thriller’s darker themes further.

“It really evolved into Anne and Dakota saying, “What if while she’s making out with him, it turns into [Anne]?” And me going, “If you want to do that, yeah.” And I thought there was something very sexy, erotic, about Dakota being like, “I’m just going to sit on your lap and start kissing you.” She sees [Jeremy] and just goes there, and that felt like the beginning of something that felt transgressive. She took this thing that she wants, and he’s there for it,” Showalter said. 

According to Showalter, Johnson brought an unexpected energy to one moment by making a spontaneous choice that changed the tone of the scene.

The choices helped establish the complicated attraction at the center of the movie while keeping the characters’ relationships tied to the larger mystery.

What is Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson’s Verity movie about?

Based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel, Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, played by Johnson, a struggling writer who receives an unexpected career opportunity. Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett, hires Lowen to finish the remaining books in a successful suspense series written by his wife, Verity Crawford, portrayed by Hathaway.

Verity is unable to continue writing after a serious car accident leaves her incapacitated. Lowen travels to the Crawford family’s isolated home to go through Verity’s research and notes before taking over the series.

While searching through Verity’s private office, Lowen discovers an unpublished manuscript containing disturbing claims about the Crawford family’s past. She begins questioning whether the document is a truthful account or something designed to manipulate anyone who finds it.

As Lowen becomes closer to Jeremy, the situation becomes increasingly difficult to understand. Attraction, secrets, and suspicion begin to overlap as she tries to determine what really happened inside the Crawford home.

Amazon MGM Studios will release Verity in theaters on October 2, 2026.
