Amy Poehler is calling out the Oscars’ ongoing comedy snub and the problem behind it. On her Good Hang podcast, the Parks and Recreation star spoke about how the Academy sidelines comedies every year.

Amy Poehler blasts the Academy Awards for snubbing comedies

It began when Benedict Cumberbatch, her guest on the episode, remarked: “If you can do comedy, you can do anything, I really do believe that.” Poehler agreed, but with sarcasm: “Of course. You don’t have to tell me, babe. Every single year at the Oscars, everybody gets blanked and all the serious people get up and accept and accept and accept, and it’s some hot bulls— because comedy is not easy.”

She praised Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman for being able to switch seamlessly between comedy and drama, something she believes deserves far more respect.

Her point highlights a long-standing truth: dramas dominate Oscar night while comedies rarely earn recognition. The Academy traditionally favors heavy dramas that tug at heartstrings and showcase emotional performances. Comedies, even when critics praise them or audiences embrace them, often struggle to break through.

Satire and dramedy have allowed some exceptions to break through. Get Out, BlacKkKlansman, and The Favourite earned nominations because of their dramatic undertones. More recently, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Anora won Oscars, proving that films with comedic elements can succeed at the highest level. Still, the Academy rarely honors comedy as the central genre, leaving many celebrated works overlooked despite their cultural impact and audience popularity.

In the 2025 Oscar race, comedies face challenges again. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia and Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly emphasize drama, even with flashes of humor, which keeps them in awards conversations. Meanwhile, straightforward comedies like Friendship, Good Fortune, and The Naked Gun earned strong reviews but remain long shots for major recognition, continuing the uphill battle for the genre.
