Netflix subscribers won’t be able to stream the critically acclaimed mockumentary series Documentary Now! on the platform from next month. Over its four seasons, the show has built an excellent reputation, receiving high praise and impressive ratings on review-aggregator sites.
Documentary Now! is leaving Netflix very soon
Documentary Now! Seasons 1-4 will exit Netflix’s streaming library on Saturday, May 9, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
The show is a satirical anthology series that parodies popular documentaries and features fictional new topics every episode. Dame Helen Mirren appears at the beginning of each episode as the “host” and introduces each installment as if they are real-world events.
Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers, and Rhys Thomas created and produced the series for the IFC (formerly the Independent Film Channel) network. Season 1 premiered on August 20, 2015, with subsequent episodes airing weekly. The first three seasons had seven episodes each, but the fourth installment has only six.
Across its 27 episodes, Armisen and Hader both often appear in comedically exaggerated roles. Furthermore, the series also includes cameos from Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Alexander Skarsgård, Anne Hathaway, Irving Azoff, Maya Rudolph, and Jonathan Pryce, among others.
Reportedly, the showrunners got the idea for the series while working on Saturday Night Live. Hader and Armisen’s 2013 History of Punk skit became one of the starting points of the premise of Documentary Now! (via Entertainment Weekly). However, Hader also credited Woody Allen’s mockumentaries Take the Money and Run and Zelig as major sources of inspiration.
Although the gap between seasons has widened with each installment, the show has remained equally well-reviewed. On Rotten Tomatoes, Documentary Now! boasts a 95% critic rating and a 86% user rating for all four seasons. Furthermore, the show has earned six Primetime Emmy nominations, though it has not won any.
Netflix subscribers have roughly three weeks left to stream Documentary Now! Seasons 1-4 on the platform.
