Aliyah Boston’s Gesture To A’ja Wilson Caught On Camera As Officiating Draws Criticism During Fever’s Loss Vs Aces

A 17-point deficit is probably not what the Indiana Fever fans expected in the very first playoff game, but that’s what they got as the Las Vegas Aces outplayed the Fever. Aliyah Boston spent much of Game 1 against the Aces battling in the paint as the Fever crashed and burned against the defending champions. At one point, the center took a moment to gesture toward A’Ja Wilson, saying a lot without ever speaking a word.

The moment came in the fourth quarter with 5:48 left on the clock and the Aces leading by 20. Boston, who was guarding Wilson in the mid-post, saw the Aces start to turn around and lift for a jumper, making brief contact with her elbow. Though the shot didn’t fall, Aliyah Boston was called for a foul, much to her and the team’s dismay.

That foul marked the end of Boston’s night, leading to her being removed from the game. As she headed to the bench, Boston turned around towards a referee and waved her arms around in a flopping motion, seemingly calling out Wilson for embellishing contact. The moment was caught on the ESPN broadcast, which was then clipped and reposted to X by Kyle Ingram.

Part of Boston’s frustration might have been the fact that this was perhaps the best scoring night of Wilson’s playoff career. She scored 38 points on 15-of-19 shooting, a playoff career high, while also grabbing 16 rebounds and playing stellar defense, recording two steals and four blocks.

Aliyah Boston tried her best, finishing with a team-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, adding eight rebounds and four assists. Despite decent scoring performances, none of it was enough to hold the Aces back. Clark and her backcourt partner Kelsey Mitchell were a big part of Indiana’s struggles tonight, as the two shot a combined 10-33 from the field and turned the ball over nine times between the two of them.

Another controversial foul sequence involving Wilson took place soon after the one involving Aliyah Boston. This time, Indiana guard Lexie Hull attempted to draw a charge against Wilson in the post, with the two making contact as the latter drove to the basket with about 1:40 left in the fourth quarter.

However, Hull ended up being called for a foul, and despite a coach’s challenge from Indiana head coach Stephanie White, the referees decided to uphold the call. One of the people who thought Hull shouldn’t have been called for a foul was Fever beat reporter Scott Agness, who made his opinion clear on X.

“Stephanie White using her challenge 1:39 into the second half. Lexie Hull stood her ground and was run over by Wilson. Call went against Hull. White stormed out, called timeout. Not sure how, in any way, that could be on Hull. Call stands. Wow,” Agness wrote.

For now, all that is left to do for Indiana is prepare for Game 2 at home on September 29. Only time will tell if they can bounce back from the loss against the Aces, especially with their season hanging in the balance.
