There are two types of war movies: those that try to capture the reality of conflict, and those that embrace the fantasy. For every hard-hitting Saving Private Ryan or All Quiet on the Western Front, there’s a Great Escape or Inglourious Basterds, which use real life as the basis for more crowd-pleasing entertainment. Made in 2024, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is firmly in the latter category. Directed by Guy Ritchie, and starring Henry Cavill alongside Alan Ritchson, the film is currently a huge hit on the Netflix charts, despite having only earned back one half of its budget at the box office. And with its fantastical spin on a real-life story, it’s clear to see why streaming audiences are flocking to it.
