Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Netflix series just added an Oscar-winning star to its cast. The adaptation of a bestselling novel reveals new details about its growing ensemble and creative team.
Alicia Vikander joins Netflix’s adaptation of Enigma Variations
Alicia Vikander will star alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the Netflix limited series Enigma Variations. Variety confirmed the casting on June 29, 2026. Vikander will play Claire, to whom the protagonist Paul gets married in the novel.
Netflix originally picked up the project in March 2026 with Taylor-Johnson attached to lead. The series adapts André Aciman’s novel of the same name. Aciman also authored Call Me by Your Name, which became a critically acclaimed film.
The official logline describes the show as following Paul, “a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across ten transformative years.” It calls the project “an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love.” The series poses the question of whether people will recognize the right person in a world of endless choices.
Notably, Vikander won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for The Danish Girl. She also starred in Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Green Knight, Tomb Raider, and Irma Vep. Meanwhile, Taylor-Johnson recently appeared in 28 Years Later, Nosferatu, and Nocturnal Animals.
On the creative side, Amanda Kate Shuman will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on the series. Additionally, Oliver Hermanus will direct and executive produce the project. Studio Media Res is behind the production, with Michael Ellenberg, Christina Malach, and Lindsey Springer executive producing. Furthermore, Aciman and Monica Levinson will also executive produce.
Beyond this project, Media Res currently produces The Morning Show and Pachinko for Apple TV+. The studio also has several upcoming projects, including The Dealer at Apple TV starring Jessica Chastain and Adam Driver. Similarly, HBO’s The Chain from Damon Lindelof is also in development at Media Res.
