A Different World RT Score Is Not What Fans Wanted for Cosby Show Spin-off’s Reboot

The Rotten Tomatoes scores for the Cosby Show spin-off reboot are now out. Unfortunately, the early ratings for A Different World did not match the fans’ expectations.

Latest updates on Rotten Tomatoes reveal that the Netflix show has faltered significantly. At the time of writing this article, A Different World has a 40% Tomatometer score based on 5 reviews. While fans had high expectations for the project, the ratings have not reflected that so far.

Netflix is taking its fans back to the historic Hillman College, 39 years after the original series premiered on NBC. Felicia Pride created the show, while Debbie Allen served as the executive producer for A Different World.

Reviewing the show, Jen Chaney from Roger Ebert wrote, “[It] feels so beholden to where it came from that it can’t quite break any new ground of its own.”

Screen Rant‘s Nick Bythrow stated, “The show feels less like a sitcom, and more like a drama wearing a sitcom coat of paint.”

Lyvie Scott from TV Guide added, “Passingly charming as it is, Netflix’s revival is trying too hard to relive the glory days, rather than reshape this world for the next generation.”

What is the A Different World reboot about?

The first season of A Different World revival was released on Netflix on September 24, 2026. The narrative of the reboot revolves around Dwyane Wayne and Whitley Gilbert’s rebellious youngest daughter, Deborah Wayne. Deborah begins her freshman year at the Hillman College. After losing her spot at NYU Tisch, she has landed at the historic HBCU, which is her parents’ alma mater. In the 10-episode series, Deborah navigates college life while trying to create an identity of her own.

The synopsis of the TV series, per IMDb, reads, “Deborah Wayne enters her freshman year at Hillman College, her parents’ HBCU alma mater, where she must escape their shadow and build her own legacy.”

Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are returning as Dwyane and Whitley. Maleah Joi Moon is portraying Deborah Wayne. In addition to her, the cast of A Different World features new faces, including Jordan Aaron Hall, Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Kennedi Reece, and Chibuikem Uche. Their characters are also beginning their journeys at the Hillman College.

Reflecting on the new cast members, showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride said, per Netflix Tudum, “These are characters that you can fall in love with and relate to. This new cast is so amazing.”
